DANIEL JOHNSTON
with special guest Laura Marling
“Daniel Johnston is hip-hop in a way. I know fly boys and girls that dig his shit. That's what they say. Does Mos Def?, He should love some of Daniel's bedroom productions... I mean how does one pay respect to Fela Kuti without free-styling some DanJohn on top? Kids and pre-school kids that don't know a cassette or CD love Daniel and his songs. Skaters adore him, hipster kids wear his t-shirts (and African Apparel) and I still find his music inspiring despite often listening to them in a slight state of pain or unease. 'The Then Chronicles' a seminal (DJs can use that word) cassette compilation that we all played back in the early noughties brought DanJohn back into my life. I have not seen the film...have you? A friend and I want to make a feature film on hippies, it will play Argentina to Papa New Guinea....hippies are everywhere, this is my next project after the book... anyway... he loves DanJOhn and he says fey indie is the new hippy. I disagree and Daniel is not fey he is just got his own issues and loves.
“Daniel Johnston got played on my radio show alongside Otomo Yoshide playing 'Strawberry Fields' and Vase [key lo-fi songwriter from the West Country – Qu Ed] and quadraphonic Flaming Lips... the whole station loved him like a secret crush. I have to say cartoons, junk food, the Meat Puppets or K Records are not my thing but DanJohn makes you hungry and sometimes Maccie Dees rule.
“I don't have a radio show in Bristol anymore...and I am currently writing my book on the Welsh but I will be at this show. Peace.” - Dictated by Adrian Lyne (Radio DJ) to Mail Dass for the exclusive use of Qu Junktions
